How?

Why do my a-hole neighbours above me (Yes boys I’m talking about you)  only seem to party and make stupid “I’m a privileged frat-boy who’s Daddy bought me an apartment so I can be a loud douche without thinking/caring about my neighbours” noises on the nights I have to get up early the next day?

How is that possible that they always seem to know when I need to get up early? Do they teach that skill at Douche College?

I’m making an impromptu visit to Vancouver today to visit my niece and I wanted to be in good form for her but I may just fall asleep in her lap after last night’s mere 6 hours sleep. I’m not a happy camper when I don’t get enough sleep, especially when I have to travel alone and do all the driving. Ugh.

Plus poor Gerry was sawing logs all night … so couple that with the sounds of drunk a-holes coming home at 1:30am to play guitar and sing loudly (who thinks that’s a good idea at that time of night?) made for a very bad nights sleep.

I put in ANOTHER complaint to the strata and I’m done being nice and understanding.

We had to have a “meeting” a while back with The A-Hole boys and their Dad so we could explain to them that the sounds we hear during the day are no big deal but that after 12am at night we need them to keep it down – which I don’t think it’s an outrageous request and BTW I think 12am is pretty generous of us. Normally strata rules say 11pm. Their Dad said they would be on their best behaviour – yet I have to call up there at least once a month to tell them to pipe down.

Granted once a month is better then when I had to call every couple of days … so that’s nice … but hearing party/garageband/ping-pong/men drinking shotgun and yelling like they invented fire sounds after 12am is not ok.

Ugh.

I’m done ranting now. Let us pray that this is the last time I hear from those boys … otherwise payback is going to be a bitch and her name is SARAH!

Can you make a complaint to the condo association? Is there one?

  2. Your strata bylaws probably contain something to the effect that no resident can behave in a manner that interferes with other residents’ enjoyment of their property. This also includes persistent barking dogs and more controversially, excessive smoke from tobacco or pot.

You can strengthen your case before strata by enlisting neighbours who are also bothered. Keep a detailed diary of incidents. I know it seems like trouble but strata needs it in writing in order to enforce the bylaw successfully–douchebags have rights, too.

If the douchebags fail to comply, fines can be levied (by law, their condo can’t be sold until the fines are paid).

(I am not a lawyer, your mileage may vary, etc.)

Thanks Robert. For the last 2 years we’ve been trying to “be cool” about it … I don’t want to be the Shhhh-Nazi of the building but they’re forcing my hand. The Strata has already sent them a warning letter and that’s when the meeting with their Dad happened. I’m not being “cool” anymore about it. I’m exhausted. 🙂

The other issue is … I am their only neighbour who is connected to them (via ceiling/floor). So there are no other neighbours to corroborate our issues with noise. But I promise you this … NO MORE MS. NICE LADY! last night was the last straw. 🙂

I lived above a restaurant that built a stage (for live music!!!) under my bedroom about a year after living there.
They were breaking noise bylaws but I was also generous and asked for them to keep it down many hours later than the bylaw states.
Being generous just allowed them to take advantage of me!
I say bring on meanie Sarah and hopefully you’ll get results for real this time!

I used to have neighbours like that at my old apartment. They would have LOUD parties and get into fights, you could hear the punches connecting, and they smoked sooo much weed that if you wanted to get high, you just needed to go out into the hall and breathe deep. Several times when it got too loud, I did the most annoying thing I could think of, that I thought might give them a hint to quieten down. I would play the song Ma-Na Ma-Na at full volume 3 or 4 times in a row, then turn it off, usually the music and noise from upstairs would go quiet immediately.

Since you’re the only connecting neighbour they have, why not try recording their noisy nonsense? It might help to further your case with the Strata.

Honestly, I would call the cops after all this time. I had noisy neighbours at my first apartment and they were evicted. Once we moved to a condo, we didn’t have any problems for the first year and then we suddenly had university douchebags above us. I too tried to “be cool” about it but after awhile, enough was enough. I had a talk with them and ended up being threatened (though they changed their tune once my bouncer paramour had a chat with them)! After that, I called the cops on noisy neighbours (which ended up moving beside us after the above ones moved out – ugh!), and it was a good thing I did that because the guy was abusing his gf (though she covered for him).

I’m so glad we’re in a house now. Being in an environment with obnoxious neighbours that you have to share a roof with is incredibly stressful. 🙁
