The Curse …

Ended up in the hospital yesterday. ๐Ÿ™

I got to work at Sarah’s Place and by around 12:30 I started to feel really sick … my period had arrived a few days ago but this month my period took a turn for the worse. I started sweat like crazy and then felt really sick and I realized that I was about to enter into “THE CRAMP ZONE”.

I’ve ended up in the hospital before with these kinds of monster cramps but my last bout was in 2009 and I thought my naturopath and I eradicated them …

These cramps are excruciating. Not regular every-day period cramps but the kind of cramps that are debilitating. I called Gerry and he whisked me to the hospital… On our way to the hospital the cramps were so painful that Gerry had to stop the car so I could throw up at the side of the road. Sexy.

We got to the ER and the admin nurse recognized me from the news story I was interviewed for last week. She wanted to chat about that and as I was doubled over the desk in pain I thought … “is she chatting with me about this because she’s clueless or because she’s trying to assess how much pain I’m in?”

They told me I could walk into the waiting area but I couldn’t even stand up … they fast-tracked me to a gurney in the hallway. I have no idea how long I lay in the hallway writhing in pain but at one point I had to throw up in a garbage can. ๐Ÿ™

Luckily Gerry was there with me to hold my hand and tell me I was still cute even with puke breath. I really wish we hadn’t watched the movie Contagion the night before. *gag*

By the time the doctor got to me the worst of the pain was over and he had me do a pee test to see if I’m pregnant (can you have your period and be pregnant?) and sent me home. It was a total waste of time … but I’d rather be at the hospital in that much pain because who knows what could happen. Better safe then sorry.

The doctor had me do a mid-stream pee test to see if I was pregnant and it came with the craziest instructions …

#1. Wash hand thoroughly. Hand? Just ONE hand??

#2. Wash meatal? MEATAL? What kind of word is that? I looked it up and the only word I could find that’s similar is Meatus which means “an opening or passageway”

Meatus. That’s a terrible sounding word.

So … I guess it’s time to go back to the doctor and figure out what is going on. Anyone in Victoria have a good open-minded doctor (preferably in the downtown core) who is taking new patients?

BTW. I’m ok now. I came home. Lay around on the couch and watched bad tv and I’m back at work today feeling a little tired but fine. ๐Ÿ™‚

Dr.Houston @ the Yates&Quadra (behind the Market) medical clinic is awesome, very open minded and doesn’t just prescribe antibiotics for everything. Not sure if he is taking new clients but he is usually in the walk in a few days a week ๐Ÿ™‚ His number is 250-382-3456

When my cousin was pregnant with her first kid, she still has a regular period. It was light but it was still there so it took a while before she even knew she was pregnant.

You should hit a walk-in clinic instead of the ER in victoria. If the clinic sees its an emergency they will take you right away…instead of waiting for hours at VGH.

The Vancouver Island Sexual Health clinic is AMAZING, seriously, least judgmental place I’ve ever been doctor wise. I don’t think they do drop in’s but you can make appointments, and since they have tons of volunteers it would at least be a good place to call to find a specialist for your particular problem if they weren’t able to help!

    Hey Sarah,
I used to deal with something very similar, for every period, for five years. I couldn’t go to school, I was just curled up in bed sweating like crazy, but still really cold, puking until I passed out, woke up, puked again, until eventually I rode the thing out. During that time I found taking a iron supplement everyday would sometimes make the pain less intense, or prevent the whole thing at all, but it was pretty flaky. Finally when I graduated and moved out I took myself to a doctor, and she was amazed I dealt with it for so long and now I’m on novo-naproxen. Just an intense painkiller/anti-inflammatory. I take it whenever I start to show signs of my period coming/starting and pop one every eight hours on my first day because that is how long it lasted. My doctor who prescribed them live in Prince George, but hopefully there is something else you can take from my experience? I don’t know. Anyways, hugs! You are still one of my favourite cookbook chefs and all around awesome vegans, despite with your puke breath.

Doctor John Cooper, gynecologist, helped me so so so much. His office is right near Jubilee Hospital.
He was attentive and really listened to me and when we were done talking, he clearly outlined what my options were. He went over which options were viable and which were not and he gave me the control over which direction to go. That really impressed me a lot and I felt like I was driving the bus too.

In my particular case, I was having maybe 1 good week a month where I wasn’t suffering from some stage of my period so it wasn’t much of a life. I had cysts, endometriosis and it all culminated with me having a hysterectomy but leaving the ovaries. Well, 1 ovary was coated in endo so I only have the one. Wow, though, I have my life back. No pain, no cramping, just some slight moodiness once in a blue moon when that ovary gets a little feisty. I feel better than I ever have, totally normal and when menopause hits, I’ll go through it naturally.
I sure hope you find someone to help you through this…it’s awful.
