Port…

I was just dusting the house and came across my port that I saved from when I was doing chemo.

This port was installed under my skin below my clavicle and administered chemo as well as fluids, medication and was also used to draw blood. It saved my veins from collapsing and having it installed was one of the best decisions I made.

I pushed my doctor and insisted on having it for my treatment. The weight of it is shocking. I carried it around for almost a year… So grateful for my port and shedding a happy tear that this part of my life is behind me.

So that’s what they look like! I had one myself for a year during my own b.c. treatment….I would sometimes palpitate where it was located just under my skin, trying to get any sense of its shape, but all it only ever felt like was just a hard, unyielding ‘lump’. Colorful too — who knew…??? In any case, so happy the treatment is successfully behind you now — congratulations! Before you know it you’ll be 5 years out (like me!) — here’s wishing all the best to you in health and wellness…!

I have the same purple port, but 14 months later it’s still in place. My veins are so crappy, and there are more surgeries in the pipeline, so for me it’s better to keep it for now and just get it flushed and locked every month. And yep, it was a push to get it installed, and a smaller but still distinct push to keep it.
