London

Arrived at Toronto airport at the crack of 6am and was greeted by some wicked public art.

I didn’t catch who the sculpture was made by but if you stood in the middle of the structure you could hear EVERY single conversation in the airport like they were happening right beside you. It was very cool… πŸ™‚

The 7 hour flight flew by (nuk nuk) and that was thanks to the inflight TV that Air Canada provides. I read my book (Bossy Pants by Tina Fey). I watched crappy movies (I seriously can’t remember what they were – something with J-lo and something with Reese – both forgettable). I had ordered another “fruit meal” through Air Canada and again was surprised at how nice the fruit was. I had also brought my own meal of left-over Quinoa and veggies from dinner the previous night. YUM!

I arrived at Heathrow around 9:30pm just as the sun was starting to set. My cousin Karen was at the airport to greet me … I was worried I wouldn’t recognize her since it had been 25 years since we last saw each other but I picked her out of the crowd immediately. She was the one jumping up and down and yelling my name.  πŸ™‚

She and her hubby gave me a ride to my hotel (Ibis near Wembley Stadium) and I settled in for the night. Ibis is a budget hotel so I wasn’t expecting anything fancy but the rooms were nice, clean (I checked for bedbugs before I unpacked) and modern and their bathrooms are in a “pod”.

My view was of Wembley Stadium …

…and after a quick FaceTime chat with Gerry I headed to bed. I wanted to try and get my body clock adjusted to the time difference.

I feel asleep pretty quickly and then about 3am I woke up gasping for breath. OH MY GOD!! My room was so f-ing hot! I tried to open the window and get some fresh air but it only opened about 2 inches. Then I looked at the thermostat and tried to figure out why there was HOT AIR blowing into my room from the air conditioner.

I called down to the front desk where I was informed that my room did not have an air conditioner but in fact had a “air regulating” stystem and that if it was cold outside it adjusts the room temperature accordingly. I told him it wasn’t working and that my room was unbearably hot. He said it “wasn’t his problem” and hung up on me.

W. T. F.?

I was so tired and hot and angry – but more tired … so I dampened a towel and lay it across my naked body and fell back asleep until about 5am when the FIRE ALARM went off! I jumped out of bed like a shot and ripped open the curtains to see Wembley Stadium laughing at me. It said “You thought you were going to get a good nights sleep huh?

The fire alarm finally stopped and I heard voices in the hallway so I put on pajamas and opened up the door to see if we needed to evacuate. I was greeted by a tall skinny Danish man in the smallest (but loudest) man panties I have ever seen.

He had no idea what was going on and was walking around in a daze. I called the front desk and it turned out the bakery was baking bread and the kitchen got too smokey. I re-dampened my towel and lay back down trying to quell the adrenaline that was pumping through my veins.

I woke up around 10:30am and actually felt pretty good considering the night of sweating and fire alarm induced heart attacks I had had. After a long shower in the pod – I shook up a Vega Smoothie, ate a banana and called my Auntie Jean!

I haven’t seen Jean or my Uncle Geoff since 1986 and it was so wonderful to see them again. We sat in the dining room and talked for hours … it was like no time had passed at all. Isn’t it great when you have family like that?

I brought with me about 250 photos of my Mum’s which spanned from when she was a baby until she passed away at 39. I thought that Jean (my Mum’s sister) would have seen them all but in fact there were many (including some of the childhood photos of my mum) that she had never seen before. It was a really fantastic way to learn more about my family … Jean and Geoff had a story for every photo and each story lead to another story. We spent the entire day/evening chatting and I came back to my hotel exhausted but so happy that I had finally made the trip over to see them.

I went to the front desk and asked them about the heater/air regulator. She told me that there was nothing they could do – I asked if I could have a fan or a maintenance person come look at my room. She said no and then walked away. Wow. RUDE! Normally I would have checked out of the hotel but I was so exhausted. I just wanted to sleep …

Tomorrow was going to be a full day.

Toronto

My trip to Toronto -> London UK -> NYC got an early start with a trip to the airport at 6:30am. Ugh. I am sooooo not a morning person but my travel adrenaline kicked in as my alarmclock went off. Weeee!!

Even though I order a veggie meal from the airline – I always bring my own food.

Today I brought a brown rice/veggie stir fry topped with flax oil and nutritional yeast. YUM! Instead of a “meal” I ordered a “fruit” meal from Air Canada and I was pleasantly surprised. Grapes, apple slices, strawberries, melon … Not bad. Not bad. πŸ™‚

I arrived at Pearson Airport and had to wait forever for my luggage…

My friend Jen (who came to pick me up) and her kids were anxiously waiting on the other side for me and when I FINALLY got my bags  we only had a few minutes to visit because when I arrived at Shoshana’s house – she informed me that I only had 5 minutes to fluff my hair, brush my teeth and get back in the car to go to see the Kurt Swinghammer show – Turpentine Wind.

Kurt Swinghammer, Canoe Lake from Justin Stephenson on Vimeo.

The show was mind-blowing!! CBC was there recording the show – so keep an ear open for it. It was a really beautiful show. My friend Maury (and Sho‘s husband) plays bass on the recording … watching him play is always a treat. I have such talented friends.

After the show – Sho, Graham, Teresa (Maury had to go to his rockstar after-party) and I hit the streets to find food … sadly …everything vegan was closed but we found a Chinese restaurant open and chowed down on rice and veggies. YUM!

I hit the sack exhausted! WOOF!

Woke up early after having a weird dream about Earth Balance being banned in Canada and I was frantically trying to stock up on as much as I could … Weird … Sho was busy with work that day so I hit the streets to meet my friend Jen and her clan for lunch. On the way to the street-car  I saw these jeggings. Ummm… NO!

Kieran was in school that day – so Jen and Gavin and I walked around Kengsington Market and eventually landed at Hot Beans for lunch.

Really excellent food. I had the Jackfruit Taco (forgot to take a photo because I was too busy inhaling it) and a home-made lime-onade. YUM!

It was a really hot and muggy day so we hit the AGO to cool down and to look at art. The security at the AGO was so crazy… I couldn’t take any photos. Wasn’t allowed to have my tiny backpack on my back – had to carry it in my hand. They followed us around from room to room like we were dirty punks. Wait. We are dirty punks! But we’re dirty punks with a mortgage and a bank account. Doesn’t that count for something? *laugh*

I did get a shot of their incredible staircase.

Art galleries always have the best stairs …

After the AGO – we hit the grocery store to pick up food for dinner and on our way back to Shoshana’s we stopped at Bunners which is a GF/Vegan bakery.

I grabbed 1/2 a dozen of the gf/sf/v donuts. YUM!

At Sho’s house we threw the veggies on the bbq, made quinoa and chickpea bread … and I made a spinach salad with a strawberry vinaigrette (LDV).

And then set up camp in the backyard…

What a great day! I love my friends …

The next day was my last day in Toronto (What! Already?) and this was Henry’s day. Henry is the son of Sho & Mo and as his Auntie … it is my job to spoil him.

We went to Henry’s favourite toy store Scooter Girl to pick out ANYTHING he wanted. Henry picked a giant recycling truck. What an eco-friendly boy. πŸ™‚

That night we had a vegan sushi party and we prepped the veggies, rice and other ingredients and then set up in the backyard to feast.

Everyone made their own rolls … and we had fun making Faux Sushi and trying to come up with a name for our fantasy vegan sushi bar.

We sat on the porch into the wee hours talking about old times, new times and watching the bats circle above our heads.

Eeek! Time for bed! I have to get up at 5am to catch a flight to London. London UK BTW. Not London Ontario!! πŸ™‚

2011 GoVegan Calendar Γ’β‚¬β€œ JUNE

Time to turn over your calendar!! This month I decided to add a little Cancon (Canadian content) by spoofing the Loverboy – Get Lucky album.

First thing I had to do was find me a pair of red non-leather pants! Thank goodness for Lip Service and their gothy patent vinyl pants.  πŸ™‚

This shoot was easy in that I didn’t have to put on a face or find a wig but funnily enough the hardest part was trying to get my butt (which Gerry has lovingly nicknamed “The Onion”) to look small and tight like Mike Reno’s butt. After a few failure photos we realized that I just had to rock the onion!!

Speaking of Cancon – this months recipe is for Nanaimo Bars (pronounced NaNiMo) and they are a Canadian dessert classic that originated in Nanaimo BC in the 1950’s. They are a little time consuming to make but SO AWESOME to eat. Don’t forget to brush your teeth after eating these babies! πŸ™‚

Ugh

My Dog … just spent the entire day in bed with a migraine. πŸ™

Fergus was great. He squished right up beside me the whole day and made me sleep … and boy-howdy I slept. A lot! So much sleep that I started to have crazy dreams about carving out my eyeball with a spoon just to stop the pain.

Thank goodness for Gerry. He brought me ice-packs, water, made me a green smoothie and lay in bed (in pitch black) and watched tv shows on ipad (while I kept my eyes closed and pretended I was listening to a radio play).

Ugh. Who else gets menstrual migraines? What are we going to do about them? They’re just awful!!
