Horse Drawn Carriage protest photos!

Thanks to everyone who came down to protest the Horse Drawn Carriages and to all the townies and vacationers who signed our petition!! YAY!

Even though we are on the street talking to the public about a serious subject … we had a lot of fun or maybe it was the sugar rush from the vegan cookies. ๐Ÿ™‚

Victoria is a beautiful sea-side town to visit … but you can see in the photos that the horses work in a very car-congested downtown area and they are nose-to-tailpipe most of their day.

Think about what it’s like when you’re on your bike breathing in smelly car fumes. These poor horses have to deal with car congestion all day and into the evening.

These horses deserve to live a life of dignity …

Not slavery.

If you would like to see horse drawn carriages banned from the streets of Victoria please write a quick letter to Victoria City Hall (councillors@victoria.ca) and the James Bay Association( jbna@vcn.bc.ca). We are a tourist town and if townies and tourists (no matter where you live) write in to complain it will make a big difference.

If youรขโ‚ฌโ„ขd like to share the letter you sent and any response you may receive please send it to dave@friendsofanimals.org

We have to get these horses off the streets and onto a sanctuary where they can live out the rest of their life in a safe environment with dignity.

Here is a taste of what I wrote! Hop on the non-horse-drawn wagon folks!!

I am not a local Victoria resident; I am however, an island resident and frequent visitor to the Victoria area. I find your horse drawn carriages to be an antiquated and archaic practice. Victoria is supposed to be a beacon city for all of Canada of progressive thinking and actions, and I find your use of horses as slaves to be a symbol of inequality and human centric thinking. How can you expect the citizens of your city, and the rest of Canada to being putting the planet first versus their own convenience, if you will not include all of the inhabitants of this planet as equally important? It is inhumane to treat any creature to a life time of servitude. Horses do not belong on pavement, horses do not belong to the city of Victoria. They are meant to be roaming the plains, doing what horses find natural to do. I have not, and will not condone or support such a careless ‘service’. I am compelled to stop returning to Victoria all together as it is impossible for me to not see and react to when I am visiting an otherwise beautiful, forward-thinking, artistic and entertaining city.

Hey Sarah, this is Scott from the World Vegan Bakesale Day. I wanted to thank you for supporting the HDC Demo and hope that you’ll be able to make it out again in the future. Dave does a lot of great work on the issue so it’s nice to see others are taking note and your postings of the event will be a huge help!

    Thanks again,
    Scott.
