Reluctant

Some of you have told me that you are reluctant to send me a “worst hair” photo for the Jessicurl contest so I thought I would share a photo of me from 1986.

I was a 17 year old punk rock kid with no self esteem and a frizzed out mohawk … there’s nothing sadder than that.

Does that help?

Think of the joy you’ll be bringing other people with your “worst hair” photo for the contest.

If we can’t laugh at our frizzed out curls … then the terrorists win. πŸ™‚

Jessicurl!!

I am so thrilled to be carrying Jessicurl vegan haircare products at Sarah’s Place.

I have had a life-long battle with trying to tame my wild hair. I’ve worn it long. Worn it short. Even had a mohawk at one point … What? It was the 80’s.  πŸ™‚

Since my teen years I’ve tried everything; crimping, straightening, shampooing, not shampooing, olive oil, Vaseline, copious amounts of gel, mousse, (remember when mousse was a big deal?) and a lot of hairspray (sorry ozone) but no matter what I did or what product I used … I’ve never ever ever liked my hair. Ever.  πŸ™

Until I found Jessicurl.

I don’t mean to sound like a commercial but these products really did change how I feel about my hair. Jessica at Jessicurl has created an amazing array of VEGAN haircare products that are specifically designed for curly hair.

Let’s talk about my favourite products from her line:

Shampoo:
Jessicurl Hair Cleansing Cream changed my life. I never thought I could love my curly hair … but it cleans my crazy curls without leaving it stripped and straw like and now my hair is adorable! *laugh* This shampoo doesn’t lather up like a conventional shampoo but don’t be alarmed. It’s because Jessicurl products are anything but conventional!

I normally don’t shampoo my hair every day (too much shampooing leads to frizz) but with Jessicurl Hair Cleansing Cream I can! The super moisturizing formula will make your hair soft, silky and wonderfully clean and it’s safe for color treated hair … but as you know I embrace the gray. Gray is the new black! πŸ™‚

Conditioner:

After I shampoo with Hair Cleansing Cream I add a quarter sized amount of Aloebe Conditioner. You can rinse it out if you like but I use it as a leave-in-conditioner and I find that it smooths out the frizz and helps to make styling my hair easier.

This conditioner uses coconut, jojoba and avocado oils to moisturize the hair without being too heavy. The added benefit of a variety of herbs and spices make this a truly fabulous conditioner.

Drying:
I LOOOOOVE the Jessicurl Microfiber towel and I use it for frizz free curls! Other terry cloth towels dry my hair out where the Microfiber Towel squeezes out the  damp but doesn’t pull out the moisture … you curly haired girls know what I mean.  The microfiber towel is the size of a hand-towel and I “squeeze” out any excess water before I style with Confident Coils. You won’t believe the difference this towel makes!! Plus because it’s made from microfiber it dries quickly and travels well.

Styling:
Before I found Jessicurl I used to use 3-4 different kinds of product to get the same results that I get with a small amount of Confident Coils Styling Solution.

I run a “loonie” sized amount (that’s silver dollar size for you Americans) of Confident Coils through wet hair and then style, dry and VOILA! Adorable ringlets. Don’t settle for frizzy or poofy curls anymore!!

CONTEST!
As an introductory surprise … Jess has graciously sent me some goodies to give-a-way.

I want to hear about but more importantly I want to SEE your curly hair horror stories.

Did you have a terrible curly haircut as a kid? Send a photo. Is your jew-fro out of control and you don’t know what to do? Send a photo. Do feel like a frizzed out frazzled loser? Send a photo. πŸ™‚

Contest winner will be announced on Jan 19th.

The WORST Curly Hair story/photo will win a fantastic prize package:
1 Thermal Turban Heat Wrap with a jar of Jessicurl Deep Conditioning Treatment and a Jessicurl Product Trial Pack.

2nd runner up will receive a Jessicurl Product Trial Pack.

*PLEASE NOTE!*
I can only offer free shipping on N.American submissions: If you live over-seas and want to enter the contest; I’m afraid you’ll have to pay for shipping. If you’re ok with that – then please enter your best (or should I say worst) photo.

Permission: By entering this contest you may or may not have your story/photo showcased on the blog. I may also mock you … so if you are ok with that please send your horror stories/photos to sarah@govegan.net

Photos: Please don’t send me high resolution photos. A nice sized 72dpi photo is fine.  πŸ™‚

One last resolution …

… in light of my last post … I resolve to only focus on the positive.

Really?

Just read a review for one of my books where the reviewer called me “ugly and vain” … but makes no mention of the recipes, the written content or how the food tasted. What is wrong with people?

Earth’s Herbal Fairy Mist

Speaking of Earth’s Herbal … I’m also thrilled to be carrying Fairy Mist.

Fairy Mist can be used to cleanse a room of stinky smells, to clear and enhance mental awareness or be used as a perfume.

I’m not a big fan of perfumes. I find most of them offensive and unnatural but there is something truly magical about Earth’s Herbal Fairy Mist. It’s a gentle and enchanting blend of orange, lavender, hazelnut, rosewood and more!

Plus it makes my husband growl and paw at me when I wear it so …  πŸ™‚

I am so so so so so super excited to carry Earth’s Herbal Teas in my store!!

My wildly talented friend Lily-Fawn (of Hank & Lily Fame) not only tap-dances, plays the musical saw, trumpet, ukulele, flute and drums but she also makes the most incredible teas!! πŸ™‚

Earth’s Herbal teas use organic and wildcrafted herbs whenever available from the hills of Victoria BC and I am thrilled to offer you 4 of my favourite flavours.

Each tin contains about 40 cups of tea – 1 tsp per cup. Teas are available for purchase HERE.

New Years Resolution

Thank you to EVERYONE who sent in New Years resolutions for me!!

I’ve been thinking a lot about the things in my life that I’d like to change. I’m so blessed with blessings (is that possible?) but there are some personal changes I would like to make for myself in 2011.

#1. Work on my novel THE FUNHOUSE
Enough procrastinating Sarah. The story is finished. It just needs edits. You’ve actively been avoiding it for over a year and it’s a great story (if I do say so myself) so I want you (me) to work on it for a minimum of 30 minutes a day. Every day. You (I) can work on it for longer if inspiration strikes but you (I) must work on it every day. Think of it like exercise. You never want to do it but once you get started you feel great.

#2. Read 1 book a month
I used to be a voracious reader and you could always find me with my nose in a book but I have found that over the last couple of years (with work and the internet/facebook getting in the way) that when I have a free moment to chillax I end up vegging out in front the internet or TV instead. So this year I choose books!! I have a stack of books beside my bed that I’ve been meaning to read (and never find time for) so I pledge to make time to read at least 1 book a month.

#3. Eat more raw foods
Tracey suggests this one and in light of my no longer being able to eat soy or gluten (due to an intolerance) … I think this sounds like a good plan.  πŸ˜‰

#4. Spend less $$ on stuff and more $$ on travel
I can’t remember who suggested this as a resolution but I think it’s fantastic. My goal for this year is to get over to the UK to see my family (I have Aunts and Uncles I haven’t seen since the 1980’s) and I want to hang out with Rudee and meet all my UK readers. I’d also like to go on a Veg Voyages tour. Now I just have to figure out how to afford all this travel. I wonder if I can find a sponsor. πŸ™‚

#5. Find Dexter a FOREVER home
This sweet dog needs a home with an assertive Mummy (or Daddy) who can teach him right from wrong. Exercise him daily and drain him of his anxious energy and to forgive him for his occasional peeing inside the house. My goal is to find him a perfect love match. Think of me as eharmony for dogs. πŸ™‚

WINNERS
So the winners of this contest are as follows:

Tracey: She suggested I eat more raw foods … My stomach says YES!

and Kate: Her personal resolution is so fantastic and daunting that it gave me hives thinking about it. *laugh*

So this year I decided to really challenge myself. I am only going to eat unprocessed whole food all year that I have to cook and prepare, so no takeout or restaurants. Also I have to either buy used clothing and accessories or make my own. All my beauty products must be natural and local. I am also only going to use re-useable bottles, mugs, containers, and bags etc. In doing so I am hoping to reduce my impact on the environment, get healthier, and save some money for my wedding.
